The Study On Skip-generation Raising Effects The Agricultural Labor Supply Behavior Of Mid-aged And Older People

Now rural labor supply of China shows the “female” and “aging” trend,mid-aged and older People has gradually become the main force in agriculture labor supply.Because the shortage of preschool education’s investment and the appearance of left-behind children in rural area,the mid-aged and older People have to foster their grandchildren while they take part in agricultural work.Skip-generation raising may influences their agricultural labor supply.Based on the data of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2013,this paper uses Probit-model and Tobit-model to analyze the effect of skip-generation raising on the agricultural labor supply of mid-aged and older People.The empirical results show that skip-generation raising has no significant effect on the rate of agricultural labor force participation.It may be the result of economic pressure,the mid-aged and older People have to participate agricultural work.However,the empirical results show that it has significant effect on the agricultural labor supply time.Skip-generation raising makes the agricultural labor supply time reduce 32 hours.In addition,the paper analyzes the agricultural labor supply behavior in different gender and different regions.It shows that skip-generation raising makes women agricultural labor supply time reduce 74 hours.We guess the division of labor within the family caused this.And the skip-generation raising has a significant impact on the eastern labor supply of mid-aged and older People.Based on the results above,providing more perfect supporting system,protecting the rights of women,paying attention to the imbalances of regional development,reforming household registration system gradually,improving the rural pension system,and increasing the investment on education of the preschool children contribute to improve the agricultural labor supply and the quality of mid-aged and oder people’s life in rural.
