The Feature And Economic Benefits Of Agricultural Products Processing Industry In Guangdong Province

Agricultural products processing is an important part of the industrial chain. It can promote the added value of agricultural products, and create job opportunity, improve agricultural structure, active rural economy. Since the reform and opening up, agricultural products processing industry in Guangdong Province kept a fast growth, but the industrial technique is still in a low level. At the same time, the spatial distribution is not reasonable. It appears a low industrial efficiency and a weak international competitiveness. Some industry growth is slow, even in recession periods, which seriously hinder the sustainable development of agricultural products processing industry. To promote and improve the development of agricultural products processing industry in Guangdong, this article would analyze the development process and characteristics of agricultural products processing industry, so that can find out the deficiencies and make suggestions.Based on the theory of industry economics and development economics, This article describes the development history of agricultural product processing industry in Guangdong, and then analyze its development characteristics, so that to have a comprehensive analysis to the agricultural product processing industry in Guangdong. Agricultural products processing industry in Guangdong showed distinct phases. From 1949 to 1978, because the economic development foundation political situation is unstable, development is restrained. Due to the good development conditions, which produce lots of social demands and bring a large number of surplus labors from countryside, the agricultural products processing industry appears a rapid growth of output, but slowing down in recent years. Besides, It appears different characteristics: Employment structure and value structure is unbalanced; Profit margins declining gradually; Industry competitiveness gradually decline; Regional concentration difference is obvious. Using the data of 2013 and the principal component analysis model to measure industry economic benefit index. The result shows that,in all the composite index of 12 departments,only the index of tobacco manufacturing and food manufacturing are positive, the other are negative.This paper argues that, the industry characteristics, such as the unreasonable location conditions, the decline of labor advantage, the low level of processing, the low technology content, the low value-added products and the unbalance industry structure, are the reasons for the low economic benefits. Based on the theoretical basis of industrial development and the analyses above, this article suggests that, Policy, location advantage, competitiveness and industry agglomeration are the main factors that affects the economic benefits of Guangdong’s agricultural products processing industry.Therefore, this article puts forward some Suggestions for further development of agricultural product processing industry in Guangdong: improve the regional economic development condition, improve the competitive dynamics of the industry, optimize the industrial layout and cultivate the leading industry.
