Study On The Strategic Development Of Chengdu Airport

Since the inception of Reform and Opening-up Policy which has been lasting more than 30 years,civil airports have seen leapfrog development.The number of airports keeps growing,while their functions are constantly enhanced,and layouts gradually optimized.The business volume of airports has achieved rapid growth.The status of air transport keeps rising in the comprehensive transport system.However,in the meantime,there are severe problems existing in the civil airports of our country,such as the increasingly saturated capacity of large airports,and severe loss for small airports,etc.Driven by a series of favorable policies,such as the strategies of China Western Development and Revitalizing the Nation through Civil Aviation,Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport has now encountered the best opportunity for development in years.Given a big picture in which the airport is faced with fierce competition from other large airports in China's west and a series of existing problems of its own,if Chengdu Airport desires to seek its niche and goals for development,it must analyze its status quo from a higher and farther point of view.It must identify the strengths of its external environment and inherent qualities of which it can make use,and the developmental strategies and goals to overcome its weaknesses and avoid risks.This thesis consists of five chapters.First,the author presents a general introduction on the background,meanings,main contents and methodology of the research.Then,the author continues to identify the existing opportunities and threats for the development of civil airports in China by analyzing their external industrial environments.After that,the author presents a detailed introduction on the internal environment of Chengdu Airport,summarizing the internal strengths and weaknesses which currently exist in it.On the basis of the analyses on the internal and external environments,the author resorts to the SWOT analytic approach to identify a few optional strategies for the development of Chengdu Airport,and identifies the most suitable development strategy for Chengdu Airport,namely,Chengdu airport should Implement the enhancement and diversification as key strategies,and apply the strategy of cooperation appropriately.Chengdu Airports should achieve a further degree of market permeation,market development and product development,increase its business volume of non-aviation businesses,innovate on its business models,and improve the revenues from non-aviation businesses.In the meantime,the airport needs to expand the scope of its cooperation with other feeder airports.Afterwards,the author conducts an analysis on the capacity and potential for Chengdu Airport to optimize its function as a regional aviation hub and a gateway hub for the development of China's west,so as to identify the strategic goal for the development of Chengdu Airport,i.e.,to become the fourth national level international aviation hub.Lastly,the author presents a brief introduction on the implementation plan for the strategic goal of Chengdu Airport,and the plan consists of two phases.Compared to developed countries,China's civil airport industry is still in a relatively nascent phase.Given the constant reforms on the relevant policy systems,concerning the strategic niche and goals,the civil airports in our nation are still in an exploring stage.To some extent,this thesis is able to provide information for the reference of Chengdu Airport to identify the directions and strategies of its future development;in the meantime,concerning the analyses of industrial internal and external environments,and the methodology for the analysis and selection of strategy devising,this thesis also offers some experience for the reference of other major airports for their devising of development strategies.
