| In China’s rapid urbanization process, the presence of Chinese urban village(villages in the city)is a grim and current situation that almost every large-and-medium-sized city faces.Shenzhen,a great example of China’s rapid urbanization,is a city where this problem is outstanding,a fact can also be inferred from the city-wide hot debate on the renovation and transformation of Shenzhen’s urban villages in the recent years. As a city of mostly domestic immigrants,Shenzhen’s urban villages not only share the characteristics of most Chinese urban villages, but also carry their own distinctive features. On the one hand, the majority of low-income people need such a low-rent place; On the other hand, the rich living scenes in those urban villages are often accompanied by an undesirable living environment characterized as "dirty, disorderly, poor".The "dirty, disorderly, poor" side is mostly shown by public spaces, such as streets, alleys, squares,or open ground,so the author believes that the research on the analysis, renovation and transformation of public space of Chinese urban village is very practical.Though the figure-ground theory was originally used to analyze the visual perception organization in psychology,it was subsequently introduced by the architectural theorists and educators at home and abroad into their studies, and then widely used in architectural and urban design from the macroscopic level such as the design and planning of large cities and large residential quarters, urban fabric analysis, and so on,to the microscopic level such as street design, the relationship among the interior, the outer space and the boundaries of spaces of a building,or even to the facade design of buildings.Chinese urban villages are generally similar to the size of larger residential areas,so the figure-ground theory is applicable at the macroscopic level;for public spaces, the figure-ground theory is applicable at the microscopic level. Therefore, the author thinks that it is valid to use the theory to base the studies of public spaces in Chinese urban villages and to guide their renovation and transformation. At present, the renovation and transformation of Chinese urban villages and the public spaces mainly fall into three modes: reconstruction based on destruction, partial reconstruction and comprehensive treatment.Among them,"partial construction" and "comprehensive treatment" both include public space as a target while the latter is more holistic and requires a set of strategies. The author thinks that renovation and transformation of public spaces in Chinese urban villages based on the figure-ground theory is similar to the "comprehensive management" mode, and therefore operable. This article includes six chapters, divided into three parts. The first part includes the first to the third chapter, mainly focused on the basics of the theory and the basic concepts related to public space in Chinese urban villages. The first chapter expounds the background and origin of the topic, the object of study and the existing research of the relevant theories at home and abroad. The second chapter introduces the basics of the theory, the reference in the architecture filed, and the application at both the macroscopic and microcosmic levels. The third chapter introduces the basic concepts of the urban villages in Shenzhen and the public spaces in Chinese urban villages, and expounds the present situation and examples of the renovation of public spaces in Shenzhen urban villages. The second part is the fourth chapter. It mainly elaborates the analysis of the figure-ground relationship of solid space/public space in both Venice(partially holy Horse area)and the Shenzhen urban village Nantou Ancient Town, and then the author uses the guiding principles concluded from studying Venice’s excellent public spaces to analyze the current situation of public spaces of three urban villages in Shenzhen(Nantou,Baishizhou,Hubei Old village)with analysis of examples. The third part includes the fifth and sixth chapters, which are mainly aimed at summarizing the analysis on the public spaces of Nantou, and presenting a design proposal on renovation and transformation based on the research and the questionnaire survey data analysis; The sixth chapter is mainly to summarize the whole article, and to propose some prospects for future renovation and transformation of Chinese urban villages, especially that of public spaces in urban villages,in hope of helping such practices in the future. |
