This report is a Chinese-to-English translation practice report about the preliminary design book of China-Cambodia cooperated project. The original text is a preliminary design report of project of Cambodian stadium aided by China IPPR International Engineering Corporation;it is intended to preliminarily design the project details like design basis, such as project outline, design scope and labor division between China and Cambodia. The preliminary design of the stadium has the following characteristics:in vocabulary, the wording is relatively accurate, and simple, with a large number of architectural terminologies;in syntax, the declarative sentences prevail, with a frequent occurrence of non-subject sentences and complex sentences;in discourse, the passages are mainly divided according to the content and function, and no obvious linking word is found. The famous American translation theorist and linguist Eugene Nida believes that the essence of translation is a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communicative activity, and the purpose is to allow the communicating parties for accurate communication and understanding,so the main task of translation is to reproduce the original information, that is,"paraphrase",but different languages and different cultures usually differ from each other in form of expression,"paraphrase" needs to change the form of expression of language.Through an analysis of the original text, the author found that the preliminary design book is an information-type text,of which the main purpose is to convey the objective and accurate information,so this translation practice is guided by the "functional equivalence" theory in an effort to win the understanding of translation by the target readership consistent with the understanding of original text by the original readership to the most extent and conform to the form of expression that is familiar to the target readership. This report aims to explore the translation strategies of analyzing the engineering-type texts under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. This report can be divided into five parts.Firstly, the background, meaning and textual characteristics of the stadium translation project are expounded.Secondly, the process of translation of the stadium project is expounded. Then, the theoretical development of "functional equivalence" proposed by Nida and its specific content are expounded, and the applicability of the "functional equivalence"theory to guide the Chinese-to-English translation of the Cambodian stadium project is briefly described; Then comes the core part of this report, the "functional equivalence" theory is combined with a large number of examples in the process of translation, and an analysis is directed at the role of guidance played by "functional equivalence" theory; Finally, the author summarized the difficulties and the inspiration that is revealed in this translation activity and concluded the experiences and lessons of this report. It is hoped that this translation report can provide some references for the future research on the translation of civil engineering text.
