Chinese appellation is a large and complex system from ancient times,which not only staggered the different types,but also they have taken place in the more or less change with the development of the times.It is one of the important step to understand the ancient culture,which is learning and studying the Chinese appellation.We use the book San Xia Wu Yi as the corpora of research,whose author is Shi Yukun,and analyze the appellation to make use of the methods of synchronic and diachronic.In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the full paper is divided into three parts.In the introduction part,we made a brief overview of the process of this book and the author Shi Yukun. The paper focuses on the research status of ancient Chinese appellation and the definition and classification of the appellation.We also explored the current research status of the San Xia Wu Yi and the significance of appellation.In the first chapter,we studied and described the book of kinship appellation,and summarized the elders relatives, the same generation, the younger generation in turn, according to the principle of seniority.We analysed the important kinship appellation and concluded the characteristics of the kinship appellation in the book:kinship generalization,with different names referring to kinship and “old+kinship words”have benn widely used.In the second chapter,we made analysis to the book of the social appellation. First of all, the social appellation were classified by the relationship, the occupational identity, the physiological feature and religion. It is concluded that the social appellation follows the principle of strict arithmetic by presenting and analyzing every type of appellation, and there's a very rigid social hierarchy. Furthermore, the official name presents a retro trend.In the third chaper,we made analysis to the book of the emotional appellation and studied courtesy appellation, abusive appellation, intimacy appellation and nickname.It is concluded that both courtesy appellation and nickname are widely used.In the last chaper of conclusion,we have summarized the characteristics and research significance of this book.
