French-Cantonese Bilingual Textbook was written by Mr. Su Tianchou. It was published in the year 1936 and served as a teaching materials to local French people and Vietnamese to learn Cantonese. This book was written under the real situation of that certain period of time. The compiling notion and methods have a unique feature of its own, thus it has a particular reference function for compiling the other text books for teaching Chinese as a second language. This dissertation was divided into 5 parts. First, the author has made a general introduction to the writer and the style of the book. Second, the whole layout of the book has been discussed systematically. At the same time, comparisons have been made with Beginning Cantonese which was the same of its kind. The author has analyzed the compiling features of this book through four aspects: the phonetic marking methods, grammars, translation and vocabulary. Third, the author has studied the content of the book and found out that the book has been localized which made the author believes the importance of localization. At last, the author has summarized the historical meaning and practical significance of the book and point out the disadvantages of it as well.The compilation of text book is one of the most important part of for teaching Chinese language as the second language. We can always find inspiration from the text books written by predecessors.
