"Xinhua Idiom Dictionary" Foyuan Idiom Research

Buddhism idiom is one part of Chinese idioms,also it is an important lexical unit in Chinese vocabulary system.Take Xinhua idioms dictionary as the object of study,in this paper,we explored the structure of Buddhism idioms,found their origin and research on the changes in their meanings.Also,we provide some improvement suggestions in dictionary definitions.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,this paper is divided into five chapters.The fist chapter is “ overview of Buddhism idioms in Xinhua idioms dictionary”.First we give the definition of Buddhism idioms and then found the amount of them in Xinhua idioms dictionary with the help of other materials like Chinese idioms source dictionary was written by Jiexiu Liu and Buddhism idioms written by Ruiwen Zhu.At the same time,we summarized the definition forms in the dictionary.The second chapter is “syllable characteristics and structure types of the Buddhism idioms in Xinhua idioms dictionary”.In this chapter,we found the members of Buddhism idioms,and then summarized their syllable characteristics and analyzed their syntax structures.The third chapter is “the source of Buddhism idioms in Xinhua idioms dictionary”.After search on other books and dictionaries,we divided the source of Buddhism idioms into five types: theory of Buddhism,Buddhism etiquette,Buddhism life,Buddhist stories and Buddhist classics.The fourth chapter is “the semantic evolution of Buddhism idioms in Xinhua idioms dictionary ”.In the view of diachronic study,we found their changes of meaning.We focused on their semantic changes,emotional coloring changes and stylistic flavors,and then found 4 reasons of semantic evolution by analyzed the examples of Buddhism idioms.The 4 reasons are: Buddhist words secularized;Taking the words too literally;Buddhist disaster in the history of China;Knowledge becomes objective with the development of the society.The fifth chapter is “definition shortages in Xinhua idioms dictionary”.We put forward our own opinion in definitions,examples,written forms and marked forms.
