Shuowen Mengqiu is an philology book of late Qing dynasty, which is based on Shuowen Jiezi, analyzing the meaning of words and identifying the font as the means of research, and finally aiming to teach people literate. The whole book owns 1552 items and 2630 words, and has a systematic analysis of Shuowen. Shuowen Mengqiu is the research object in this paper. The paper analyze the chapters and summarize its characteristics. On this basis, as objectively and comprehensively as possible, examining its achievements and shortcomings. This thesis is divided into six parts, and content summary is as follows:The first part, exordium. This part introduces the reasons of my choice and the research status of Shuowen Mengqiu. Besides, it states the purpose and method used in this article. For the writing, we should start from the opinions of academic history, trying to search for the first-hand data, and based on a comprehensive and in-depth analysis, in order to make an objective and impartial evaluation and give a rightful position of the book, and so that we can provide a reference information for Shuowen's study.The second part, synopsis of Shuowen Mengqiu. This part introduces the general situation of Liuxiang, and discusses the writing reason and purpose, explaining the edition and circulation and recommending arrangement and interpretation style of the book in detail.The third part, Shuowen Mengqiu's main content. This chapter mainly make classification and sorting for the writing, which was divided into three sections. The first section is comparison of font and word meaning during the whole history, including the first three volumes of Shuowen Mengqiu, namely Volume 1 old common's meaning but now different or waste; Volume 2 modern password originated from Guwen, Zhouwen, Huoti, Suti; Volume 3 ancient different meaning but now common. The first and third volumes mainly talk about the meaning's evolution and changed of the current words in ShuoWen, and about these two volumes, we sort out them mainly based on the meaning among the words. The second volume talks over the usage of current words, and about it, we mainly based on the usage of the words when sorting it. The second section is synchronic font syndrome, including Volume 4 and Volume 5 of ShuowenMengqiu, namely font discrimination and discern. Volume 4 mainly talk about font discrimination with one word, and Volume 5 mainly talk over font discrimination with different words. About these two volumes, we primarily based on Liuxiang discern about what font when sorting them, for example, Volume 4 is divided into ZhuanLi contrast and multibody comparison, and Volume 5 is divided into Zhuanwen comparison and Lishu comparison. The third section is special characters research, including Volume 6 of the book. This volume mainly gather opposition into words and Chongwen into words in Shuowen, we also combing it.The forth part, view of writing of Shuowen Mengqiu. This chapter mainly summarized philology views of the book, contain two parts:the one is summarize the opinions of Liuxiang about font's evolution in his writing, including analyzing Guwen and Zhouwen, generalizing Libian and Ebian, descanting shape character; the other one is explore Liuxiang's current words, mostly talking about its conception and types.The fifth part, the achievement and shortage of Shuowen Mengqiu. For one thing, Liuxiang based on Shuowen, and research it from the form, pronunciation and meaning, meanwhile, Liu Xiang does not forget the purpose of teaching people, devoting to reconcile Subject Shuowen and Discipline Meng, so that he can offer help to the people who want study Shuowen. For another, Liuxiang's writing appear confused with style of Volume 5 and volume 6, and the whole book is lack of data when explaining. Besides, the book has some word classification error.The sixth part, epilogue. On the basis of overall analysis of Shuowen Mengqiu, recognize its achievements and shortcomings, and place it in the research background at that time, making every effort to give him a fair and objective evaluation, finally.
