The North-China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society was a cultural institution founded in Shanghai in 1857.During that period,the organization established their own library,museum and journal.Although there were many studies about cultural exchanges between China and the West,in the field of modern cultural exchange,scholars often pay more attention to the related thoughts and theories or characters,little attention is being given to thecultural institutions.Most of researches about the Journal of The North-China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society except Wang Yi are a word or two.The contents of the journal are all-encompassing,involving politics,history,geography,literature and so on,a large number of Sinologists,diplomats write articals anbout chinese literature.but for the the value of them,it seemed that related research remains rare.This paper intends to show their translation strategies and literary values.The object of this study is the ancient Chinese narrative literature published in the Journal of The North-China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1858 to 1948,including fiction,folklore and mythology,drama and narrative poems.The full text is divided into three chapters,the content of the first chapter is about the novel.The novel was always been the focus of sinologist.Most of the translation articles in this journal are section translation or overview,but after the text,author will add their own views including their views on Chinese novels,as well as their views on the Chinese philosophical system and so on;the content of second chapter is about the folklore and myth story.The sinologist did not just concerned about the ancient Chinese classical works,but try their best to collect those which may be ignored by the Chinese scholars,they also found the unique value of Chinese literature.The content of third chapter is about the drama and narrative poems.narrative poems of Han are rare,and ancient Chinese didn't think much of the value of the drama.The narrative poems and drama in this journal are juat overviews not full translations.
