A Practical Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Linguistic Works "The Handbook Of Discourse Analysis" (Chapter 35 & 41)

This translation report comes from the linguistic masterpiece The Handbook of Discourse Analysis.Due to strict logic,objective and highly professional content,the key point of this time translation is how to translate the information focus in the sentence of the source text into the target language coherently and cohesively.Based on the perspective of highlighting information focus,this thesis discusses the translation of attributive clauses featured by “preposition + relative pronoun” and passive sentences which largely exist in the source text.Attributive clauses featured by “preposition + relative pronoun” can be translated into adverbial of manner and place and the structure of “de” in Chinese,while passive sentences in English can be translated into active sentences and passive sentences with special marked words in Chinese.On account of differences in textual organization between Chinese and English,the thesis,starting from analyzing cohesive devices,takes a three-pronged approach of reference,substitution and linking devices to translate the source text into a text in accordance with the linguistic organization of the target language.With functional equivalence as its guiding principle,the translation practice aims at creating equivalent reading experience for target language readers as that for the source language readers.This translation practice is intended to discover similarities of such texts in English-Chinese translation,thus providing valuable experience for similar circumstances in translation.
