A Practice Report On The Selected E-C Translation Of The Advance Of Science In The Last Half-century

With the rapid development of the global economy,science and technology have become increasingly important as one of the most important driving forces.In such an international environment,English plays a more and more important role as one of the most important languages for international scientific and technological communication.Therefore,it is imperative to develop EST(English for science and technology)translation in order to promote the further development of science and technology all over the world.Taking Katharina Reiss' s and Peter Newmark's text typology as a guidance,this thesis carries out translation practice on scientific and technological texts with selected texts(selected chapters in Thomas Henry Huxley's book The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century).It consists of five chapters here.The starting chapter introduces the tasks of translation,including the source text author,the book's background,text type analysis and other content.Then the second chapter focuses on the translation process description,stating the selected theory,preparation and workflow in translation and other related content.Then the third chapter works as a case study,and translates passive sentences,attributive clauses and complex sentence patterns by using translation strategies such as division,addition,and transition.It also illustrates how to deal with the sentence level of science and technology text in the process of translation through concrete examples.The fourth chapter expounds the concrete solutions to the problems in translation practice.And the final part is a summary of translation practice,the content of which is the author's experience of this translating practice.The purpose of the report is to present a more appropriate translation and convey the information of the source text through the translation practice;to find out the suitable translation methods of this kind of text by using the translation knowledge and skills;to provide knowledge and some reference for the research in this field.
