As a typical phenomenon of disfluency, pause has received a lot of attention and has become one of the problems which interpreters want to get rid of.The thesis will focus on inappropriate pauses in English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. For those who are not native English-speakers,the difficulty in the process of listening and understanding is the major cause of inappropriate pauses, and the difficulty in the production of target language and the inappropriate effort distribution are the other two causes. In addition to improving interpreter's own language performance, some strategies can be adopted to reduce inappropriate pauses, which are syntactic linearity, paraphrase and the strategy of omission and speculation. When there's a complicated sentence, syntactic linearity will be a good choice.Complicated sentences can be cut into several independent sense-groups.If the interpreter failed to extract information from source language, the strategy of omission will be an option to avoid long-time pauses. The strategy of speculation can be adopted when the interpreter is in hesitation about target language or is not sure about the exact meaning of source language. In this case, the interpreter can infer the meaning of source language from the context. The interpreter should focus on the meaning of source language, instead of language form.
