A Simulated Interpreting Report On Good Strategy/Bad Strategy:What Is The Difference And Why It Matters

In this interpretation practice report,“Good Strategy/Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters”,a lecture given by Richard Rumelt in the London School of Economics and Political Science on business strategies,is adopted by the interpreter as the materials for simulated interpretation practice.The whole lecture lasts for around one hour and a half,and the content of the lecture touches politics,economics,military and technology.The variety of terminologies in this report has a high requirement of the interpreter's interpretation skills and professional qualities.To start with,the interpreter of this report discusses the use of the syntactic linearity principle which mainly includes segmentation,addition and conversion in simultaneous interpretation according to Daniel Gile's Effort Model.Meanwhile,under the guidance of the interpretative theory,the interpreter discusses interpretation situations where the syntactic linearity is not used based on the three-stage interpreting process(comprehensive,deverbalization and re-expression).After that,the interpreter analyzes and discusses the problems in simultaneous interpretation,such as misinterpretation and omission.Through the above research and analysis,the interpreter comes to the conclusion that the use of the syntactic linearity,for example,segmentation can effectively reduce energy load of interpreters and optimize interpreters' energy distribution;The addition can solve the bottleneck caused by syntactic differences and guarantee the communicative effect;Conversion can make the interpretation more natural.However,under some special conditions,such as when the source language provides too concentrated information or when the speaker speaks too fast or when there are too many terminologies and idioms or metaphors involved in the speech,the interpreter should get rid of the shackles of the source language,and deliver the information in a way which is acceptable to audiences.
