Qian Gechuan Translation Education Research

Qian Gechuan is a renowned and erudite essayist,translator,researcher of translation studies and English professor who has once exerted a profound influence on the history of Chinese translation.Nevertheless,many scholars mainly approach Qian Gechuan from his life,essay writing,translation thoughts and his basic English extension movement,with relatively few concentrating on the educational value of his translation activities.This thesis attempts a comprehensive study of Qian Gechuan's translation for education.Firstly,it analyzes Qian's thoughts of translation for education from the perspective of how to cultivate students' translation competence,the relationship among reading,teaching and writing,and his C-E translation.Secondly,it discusses Qian Gechuan's educational and teaching activities centered on translation,including his compilation and translation of English textbooks,compilation of annotations in translated works,and his translation and introduction of Western literary works.In terms of Qian's English textbooks,this paper analyzes the structure of them and then elaborates on how he carried out English teaching,translation teaching and character education through his bilingual textbooks;in the aspect of annotations,this thesis interprets Qian's efforts on language teaching,translation teaching and cultural education in his annotations from the view point of pedagogy,cognitive context,"thick translation",translation of dialect,indirect translation,and cultural translation;as regard Qian's translation of Western literary works,it discusses his selection of translation materials and interprets the purpose and effectiveness of his translation works in terms of society,history,cultural transmission,and the guiding significance on people's outlook on life and values,and then points out that Qian Gechuan's translated works unlocked the door of the Western literature world while playing a part in spreading progressive ideas,educating the masses,and promoting the transformation of Chinese society.
