| This is a report based on the translation of the first two chapters of the book The Case Against Education: Why The Education System Is a Waste of Time and Money by Bryan Caplan,an economics professor at George Mason university. The first two chapters mainly introduce the general public’s views on education.Various data show that some knowledge learned in school is rarely used in practical work, however, the academic diploma still plays a significant factor in the labor market. Then the author draws to the “signaling model” of education and discusses the controversy over this model. The book, which was published in January 2018,has no Chinese version available.Under the guidance of Chesterman’s(1997)theory of translation norms and Peter Newmark’s(1981)communicative translation theory, the translator managed to find appropriate translation methods and techniques to solve the problems and difficulties encountered in the course of translation, namely the translation of technical terms, idioms and loanwords, long and difficult sentences and style.Four chapters are included in the translation report: Chapter One is the task description, including an introduction to the source text,an introduction to the author, and the significance of the report itself;Chapter Two describes the process of translation ranging from preparation,while-translating to quality control;Chapter Three, the case study,is the central part of the report, giving a detailed analysis of the translation difficulties encountered and the translation techniques applied in the process of translation;Chapter Four is a summary of the report, including both the lessons learned in the translation practice and the issues to be solved in the future. |
