Qian Gechuan As Patron And Translator

Editing the literary column for journal New China Monthly and contributing translations to the column between 1933 and 1936 were the major literary activities of Qian Gechuan when he joined the literati.This study first analyses the translated literature in the journal during the period in the specific social and cultural context and describes its features and the factors that influenced Qian's selection of such literature.Then those articles translated by Qian are analysed to figure out his translation strategies and the ideas behind them.This study finds that ideology and poetics dictated Qian's selection of translated works for the journal.As an editor,Qian did not follow the publisher,which is also part of the patronage,in recognizing the official ideology but chose works that resisted it.In terms of poetics,some of the works are in line with mainstream poetics but more with Qian's personal poetics,which indicates both acceptance and refusal.In addition,guided by his personal poetics,Qian rewrote some of the titles and content so that they read smooth and were more accessible to the readers as he hoped that the translations served as models for those who wanted to take up writing and helped improve the general readers' interest in good literary works and hearten them during the hard time.This study extends Lefevere's theory of rewriting and enriches studies on translated literature in China in the 1930s and on the translator Qian Gechuan.
