Modern British Diplomat Dougs Chinese Textbook Research

In modern China,a large number of missionaries and businessmen came to China to study Chinese actively.Chinese diplomats have become an important group that studied Chinese for the work.They have written books,actively spread the Chinese culture and owned important place in the history of Sinology.The paper taking A Chinese Manual which was written by Robert Douglas as an example,to explore the characteristics of the compilation of Chinese textbooks at that time,and explore its intrinsic value.This paper is divided into six parts:Introduction.This part mainly introduces the significance of this topic,research status and research plan.The significance of topic selection mainly introduces the meaning and value of the study of A Chinese Manual.The research history and present situation mainly introduces the research related to Robert Douglas and A Chinese Manual.The research program mainly describes the expected results and the specific methods used in the study.The first chapter:Robert Douglas and A Chinese Manual.This chapter introduces Douglas' s life and his works,and analyzes the reasons of writing,the compiling layout,the selection of the corpus.The second chapter:the research of the phonetic system and Chinese characters in the A Chinese Manual.This chapter is composed of two parts:phonetic system and Chinese characters.In the part of speech,the authors have pointed out that the phonetic system of the book refer to the phonetic system of the Thomas Francis Wade.In view of this,we will make a comparison between them and finds out the similarities and differences.In Chinese characters part,mainly analyse the origin,the formation of Chinese characters and taboo words.In addition,some erroneous points about Chinese characters will be identified and corrected in this part.The third chapter:the study of parts of speech in A Chinese Manual.This chapter introduces the nouns,adjectives,verbs,numerals and pronouns in the book.We find that the most obvious feature is to apply the English grammar system.although some places are not appropriate,in general,it is accord with the actual situation of Chinese.The fourth chapter:the study of vocabulary in A Chinese Manual.In this chapter,we first count the number of the vocabulary,then analyze the characteristics of lexical arrangement and find out its advantages and disadvantages.The fifth chapter:the overall evaluation of A Chinese Manual.on the basis of the previous chapters,the paper makes an evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of the book.In short,this paper starting from the Chinese textbooks that Robert Douglas wrote,elaborate the writing background,compiling layout of the book.And focuses on the analysis of the parts of speech,phonetic system,Chinese characters,vocabulary.Finally make an overall evaluation on them,So that it can provide the useful reference for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
