Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff,painted by Qiao Zhongchang of the Northern Song Dynasty,is a painting originated from Su Shi's Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff.Although this painting is unique among the landscape painting circle of the Northern Song Dynasty where painting styles of Dong,Li,Fan and Guo are dominate due to its ingenious idea simple style of painting,it has not been given enough attention to.Furthermore,due to the various reasons in the process of collection,many disputes occur with respect to identity of the author,apprentice system,creation time,artistic value and authenticity,etc.This paper attempts to use the methods of literature research,schema analysis,etc.,to study the issues related to Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff of Qiao Zhongchang.Firstly,upon systematic organization and analysis of relevant literature related to Qiao Zhongchang and his Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff,which is collected in The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,this paper believes that Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff is an important item of the Qing royalty which is handed down in order.This paper also clearly combs Qiao Zhongchang and his relevant records,birth and death,apprentice system,social status,and themes of painting that he excels at.Secondly,by comparing literature and schema features of paintings which are mainly about Su Shi's "Red Cliff",and combing the schema evolution process of "Red Cliff" paintings,this paper considers that the schema feature of Qiao Zhongchang's Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff complies with features of early "Red Cliff" paintingsThirdly,by analyzing creative thinking and language,this paper finds out that Qiao Zhongchang's Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff is a landscape painting work of Li Gonglin faction which has great originality with high painting skills.Fourthly,it can be found by comparing Ni Zan's landscape paintings and Qiao Zhongchang's Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff,that style of Ni Zan's landscape paintings are very similar with landscape paintings style of Li Gonglin faction.Meanwhile,targeting at measurement difference between Qiao Zhongchang's Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff and the records in Shiqu Baoji,and the compositions difference of Handscroll to Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff of Tapestry Qiu Ying in the Qing Emperor Qianlong period,which is collected in the Palace Museum,this paper proposes that there are problems related to front and rear parts of Qiao Zhongchang's Painting of the Second Prose Poem on the Red Cliff,such as missing.
