Yongzheng Emperor worked hard to build a prosperous country and attached importance to efficient and vigorous governance.In the early years of Yongzheng Emperor's reign,the corruption problems in Shanxi collided with his resolve to eliminate long-standing local abuses of power.In order to turn around the situations of corruption in Shanxi,Yongzheng took a series of measures to discipline officials.He carried out timely punishment of those officials who concealed the disaster situations,cracked down on severe corruption as seen in the major case involving Sukeji,appointed officials to investigate and tackle the complicated problems of deficits in official funds and food supply in Shanxi,prevailed over all dissenting views and stipulated that all of the additional taxes should be reserved in government and distributed in part to officials as salaries to avoid severe corruption as in Shanxi,and gave importance to the appointment of and strengthened supervision of officials in order to keep them honest in performing their official duties.Yongzheng Emperor made great achievements in overhauling the administration in Shanxi,encouraging officials to eliminate their long-standing abuses of power,and helping to alleviate the burden of the public and ease social contradictions.However,the limitation of these efforts should not be ignored.The feudal dynasty rectified local administration for the purpose of retaining its feudal power,and thus the rectification of local administration could not be carried out thoroughly and the problem remained complicated.The flattery prevalent in officials disclosed the feudalism of the governance.
