To begin with a childhood vision of Walter Benjamin as his primary perspective of modernity, this thesis is mainly based on the text of Benjamin's critical theory in order to clarify how Benjamin has made a shift, according to his own modernity experience,in his studies on the modernity of the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century under the influence of the revolutionary visual art culture, the advance of spatial experience and architecture theory, and the fashion phenomenon derived from the capitalist business society as well.Besides, the thesis attempts to review Benjamin's critical theory by discovering the deeply rooted seeds of similarities and connections between his “metaphor” in his text and the way material culture works so as to provide a new possibility for material culture study and to explore a brand new field for critical writing of art and design.
