After the signature of Japan-Korea Treaty of 1910,South Korea has been annexed formally by Japan and lost the status of the independent country in the world.People with lofty ideals in South Korea, however, were not reconciled to the fall of motherland and tried to restore the sovereignty of their nation through a variety of ways.South Korean independence movement launched by patriotic personage consequently is the critical topic in South Korea’s modern history. And one important person of them is Cho So-Ang,making a vital contribution for South Korean independence movement. He was born in a noble family in North Korea, and then went to Japan to study abroad. The Confucian traditional culture and the knowledge of modern culture in Japan acquired by him when he was young have a significant impact on his formation of independent ideology and are condusive to his engagement of independence movement.During that period,he on the one hand drafted the basic file and made an abundant theoretical construction for the provisional government of Republic of Korea and other independence parties by an application of his own rich knowledge and attainments in South Korean independence movement. And on the other hand, during the anti-Japanese independence movement in China,he also served for the provisional government of the republic of Korea for a long time and acted as its foreign ministry and presided over South Korean independence party affairs. His independent ideological line is the right-wing nationalism route, against the communist ideological system. But in order to strengthen the power and unity of the independence movement as well as unify independence forces,he can accept the cooperation with lefty party to some extent. What’s more,he took an active part in the semi-official meeting organized by the cultural association of China and South Korea.During the meeting,he publicized vigorously the South Korean independence, the temporary government as well as the good momentum of solidarity and unity of political groups in independence movement in order that let the world had a deeper understanding on the south Korean independence movement.A long-term strategy of the interim government of Republic of Korea is to make an use of diplomatic means to seek independence of the motherland because of her weakness.Cho So-Ang’s long-term role of foreign minister in the provisional government of republic of Korea opened a window for the world to know Korean independence and its temporary government. As political situation became more stable and international situation took a turn to the better,South Korean independence presented a new hope to the acknowledgement of provisional government of Republic of Korea after moving to Chongqing. All in all,Cho So-Ang,both the leader of interim government and the foreign minister, have strengthened the diplomatic activities and urged the international community to grant Korean independence as soon as possible and acknowledge the Korean temporary government by frequent diplomatic activities with China,Britain as well as Soviet Union. Therefore,Chongqing period is his major diplomatic career by using a variety of foreign policies, changing the diplomatic language timely with the change of situations at home and abroad and foreign objects, trying to realize the South Korea’s national independence and gain the international community’s acknowledgement for the Korean temporary government. But his foreign policy did not reach diplomatic goals due to various factors inside and outside. The contradiction among independence forces are throughout the whole process of South Korean independence movement. The infighting, therefore, consumed a lot of power and weakened the power of South Korean independence movement.Either Cho So-Ang or the right of South Korean independence party put an excessive emphasis diplomacy and to some extent ignored internal construction of the interim government, which hindered the development of South Korean independence movement.
