With the method of quantitative and qualitative analysis, the research aims at studying application situation and characteristics of English autonomous learning strategies of junior middle school students, analyzing the relationship between autonomous learning strategies and learning ability of students, discovering problems in autonomous learning and putting forward the corresponding solutions.Firstly, this paper defines some related concepts and illustrates the correlated theory on English autonomous learning and learning strategies of junior middle school students. Also, it reviews, sorts out and summarizes the research status home and abroad and analyzes the deficiencies of current studies. This is mainly reflected in that the emphasis of the research on middle school students' English learning strategies is placed on the demonstration of its role in improving the students' English performance and independent learning ability, and not the concrete analysis of the characteristics of the application of the independent learning strategies. Moreover, the emphasis is also on the research of the teaching of the independent learning strategies from the teachers' perspective, and not the students' application, which is the main body. In accordance with the shortcomings in the early research, a questionnaire survey and interview are conducted on 230 middle school students in Qufu City. Through the test of different dimensionalities, the overall reliability and validity of the questionnaire is very ideal. A total of 230 questionnaires are distributed and returned, and 202 of them are valid. In the meanwhile, three representative students are also selected from the respondents for interview. The English proficiency of these three students is high, medium and low respectively. The content of the interview is mainly the characteristics of the students' application of the independent learning strategies, and the relations between learning strategy and independent learning ability. Specifically speaking, it involves the strategies of cognition, regulation, communication and resource. It is suggested by the analysis of the questionnaire survey that there are mainly two questions currently existing in middle school students' independent English learning. On the one hand, the frequency of the students' application of the learning strategies is relatively low, and the students' awareness of applying the learning strategies needs further improvement. On the other hand, the sequence of priority chosen by the students is the strategy of regulation, the strategy of cognition, the strategy of resource and the strategy of communication. Middle school students are always restricted to the commonly used strategies, such as memorization, recitation and note-taking. Rarely have they applied the strategy of resource and communication. In the meanwhile, it can be seen from the interview with the students that most students show arelatively high level of dependence on their teachers and parents, and lack of independent consciousness and self-control ability. Under the psychological mechanism of being afraid of making any mistakes, the students' application of the learning strategies is also obstructed. Moreover, the application of the learning strategies has also affected the students' independent learning ability to a certain extent. Those students with better ability in independent learning can better apply the learning strategies. In accordance with the research results, some suggestions are put forward for the teachers.Firstly, the teachers should guide the students to gradually establish the awareness of applying the learning strategies to improve the learning efficiency, and establish a learning group led by the teachers on the basis of the students' self-control and self-discipline, so as to encourage the students to apply various strategies to solve problems independently. Secondly, the teachers should reinforce the cooperation with the parents, help the middle school students overcome their dependence on the teachers and parents designedly and pertinently, and guide the students to formulate plans of applying the learning strategies. Thus, they can help the students establish the awareness of independent learning and enhance their ability of self-control. Thirdly, the students should systematically plan the content of middle school English teaching, thoroughly apply multimedia resources and cultivate the students' interest in English learning. They should also communicate with the students, encourage them to speak and practice more, and help them get rid of the psychological mechanism of being afraid of making any mistakes. In the improvement of the students' independent learning ability, the teachers should firstly emphasize their instruction and guidance. And then, they should attach more importance to the students' training in the application of independent learning strategies, and consolidate their application of independent learning strategies. This research is innovative on the questions and content on the basis of the previous research. To a certain extent, it enriches the content and scope of the research on middle school students' strategies of independent English learning, and provides the middle school English teaching with certain enlightenment. Besides, this research also has certain limitations, such as the limited quantity of questionnaire; the subjective and emotional tendency of the students during the interview because of their maintenance of self-ego and self-pride, which will probably the judgment of the result. In order to make the research findings more comprehensive and complete, a large sample is also needed for further research demonstration.
