Church University Chinese Studies

Western missionaries with a sacred mission of "turning China into Christian" traveled to China.For the early realization of the grand goal of "the Christian Occupation of China", western missionaries started to develop church universities to foster Chinese missionary leaders and staff.But the development of church universities were excluded from Chinese society and the general public.Especially since the 20 th century,Chinese people's national pride and nationalism were growing day by day,and calls about taking back the education sovereignty increased wave upon wave.The Chinese government also successively made register requirements on church universities.For the survival and development, church universities step by step returned to the proper meaning of universities:teaching,scientific research and social services,stepping on the road of sinicization.Under the background of globalization,exploring the sinicizition of church universities,tapping the performance of sinicization to adapt to Chinese national conditions and meeting the demand of Chinese society could provide reference for our universities on how to deal with the relationship between internationalization and nationalization.In more than a dozen church universities,the sinicization of Yenching University is representative,because of positive attitude and the thorough implementation.So,this article chooses Yenching University as a case.Through the analysis of the sinicization of Yenching University to observing the sinicization of church universities,tried to find the commonality.The exordium of this article introduced the reason of my choice to this topic, researching status, researching purpose and significance, researching ideas and methods, etc. and defined two core concepts relating church universities and the sinicization of church universities. The first part from two dimensions, external thrust and internal motivation to find six background factors about the sinicization of church universities, such as the transformation of Chinese social contradictions,the impact of the Chinese university, the rising of nationalism, Barton delegation proposal, missionaries internal differences,the calls of students from church universities.The second part combining the developing course of Yenching University, divided the sinicization of Yenching University into three stages:starting, developing, thorough,and found out the specific performance of the sinicization in every stage.The third part evaluated the sinicization of Yenching University from three aspects :the status of the sinicization of Yenching University in the development of church universities,the contribution of the sinicization of Yenching University and the boundedness of the sinicization of Yenching University. The last part on the base of above analysis,combining with the current situation of universities in our country,concluded several enlightenment about the sinicization of church universities to the development of contemporary universities in our country :the first is that universities due to the circumstances to timely adjust educational behavior;the second is that universities choose measures according to local conditions;the third is that universities should stick to the university spirit in changing;and the forth is that universities should be inclusive and open.
