Compared to spoken language, the written language found in books contains a greater variety of complex and novel words. Thus, reading books affords readers the opportunity to learn the meanings of new words, which in turn increases their reading comprehension, imagination and subsequent writing skills. Beyond exposure to new words, reading benefits other child literacy-related areas including word knowledge, reading attitudes, emotional intelligence, self-confidence as a reader, self-assertiveness and beauty-appreciation. Specifically, by middle school, student performance and achievement in all subjects has been shown to be positively linked to demonstrated reading and writing skills. In light of this, early intervention to promote the development of literacy skills is critical.A child's decision to read can be influenced by a number of factors. For example, external factors including home and school literacy environment or parental and teacher involvement as well as internal factors including personal enjoyment or high grades gained from reading all may positively influence a child to read more. Moreover, having access to the Internet has brought with it important implications for children. The Internet, along with other forms of technology, consumes quite a bit of time for young people, and it has shaped their view on learning and communication. New technologies may also influence a reader's ability to understand the text's message. Because of these variations, the project that children's literacy development faces more challenges. In fact, it may be this variability in reading amount and reading content that account for individual differences in literacy performance.Li-cang district is located in urban-rural fringe area in Qingdao city. Vast differences have been observed from nearly 30 primary schools' teaching strategies of reading in this district. Children in primary schools try out their ideas and use what they know to make sense of new concepts. Within this age group, the children's reading and writing skills vary greatly. This research based on studies of the influence of extensive reading on primary school students' reading motivation and reading performance, in order to know the overall condition of primary high-graders' extensive reading condition, find out the disadvantages and give out some useful suggestions. A total of 300 randomized sample of 5th and 6th graders from 5 representative primary schools participated in this study to examine the interests and purposes, time and contents, strategies and habits, academic guide and support of the children's extracurricular reading. This thesis is divided into five chapters: chapter one is introduction which contains the background, literature review, importance, content and methodology of this study.
