As China lies in the critical period of urbanization transition, study of the expansion pattern and driving forces of urban land can offer references for scientific formulation of urban planning, land planning and various kinds of land use policies,as well as proper use and distribution of urban land.Taking Jiangsu Province as a research area, this thesis is significant for solving land use issues in economic developed regions. With Jiangsu cadastral investigation results from 1997 to 2013 as data resource of urban land scale expansion, vector data from TM image interpretation of 1995,2000,2005 and 2010 as data resource of urban land spatial expansion, methods such as landscape pattern indexes and regression analysis are adopted to analyze the temporal feature and spatial change process of urban land expansion in Jiangsu Province, and expose its regional differences.Meanwhile, different patterns of urban land expansion are divided in view of quantity and spatial form, and driving forces of these expansion patterns are studied. The main results include:(1)The temporal change feature of urban land expansion from 1997 to 2013 in Jiangsu Province was analyzed.Urban land scale in Jiangsu Province was increasing totally, with different tendencies in each period.Urban land expansion rate first increased and then declined, appearing fast on the whole. In the meantime, urban land expansion intensity was raising through time, with extraordinary regional differences.(2)In the view of expansion spatial form, degree of fragmentation of urban land between 1995 and 2010 in Jiangsu Province was increasing,as the degree of patch shape complication was high, indicating that urban land layout was irregular and needed strengthening land use control. On the other hand, average patch area was raising while dispersion index was reducing, meaning that urban land tended to concentrate.Although the spatial expansion patterns of urban land in 13 district cities under Jiangsu Province were all extensions, expansion direction in each city differed. With quadrant method, extensional urban land expansion form could be further divided into unidirectional expansion, bidirectional expansion,tri-directional expansion, and tetra-directional expansion. Moreover, unidirectional expansion cities located mainly in surrounding area near Jiangsu province boundary, bidirectional expansion cities lay in both fringe and central area, while tri-directional expansion cities located mainly in southern Jiangsu Province.(3)Economic and social forces were the main driving forces responsible for urban land scale expansion.Hence, linear regression method was used to evaluate the relationship between economic and social factors and the area of urban land from 1997 to 2013 in Jiangsu Province. The results indicated that financial revenue had the highest influence degree on urban land scale enlargement in Jiangsu. Therefore, urban land scale expansion in Jiangsu Province was mainly driven by economic development factors, with population and labor factors taking the second place. In addition,Wuxi City,Taizhou City and Xuzhou City were chosen as typical cities to analyze their driving forces of scale expansion. As a result, the higher expansion rate and the larger expansion scale of the city was,the stronger influence social and economic factors had on urban scale expansion.(4)Driving forces of urban land spatial expansion included natural, social, economic and location factors.23 spatial driving factors, therefore, were chosen to run multiple stepwise regression. As the results showed, indexes such as original area of urban land inside the quadrant, length of national expressway, length of railway, distance from national expressway and distance from state highway had the most influence on the area of urban land expansion inside the quadrant, however, the added value of secondary industry and tertiary industry, total investment in fixed assets, urban population and the area of water had the least effect on the area of urban land expansion.
