Since the 80s of last century, the development of town tourism in the world has brought considerable economic benefits, but it also faced with the lack of traditional feature and characteristics of space. This paper takes a historical and cultural town located around Chao Lake - Sanhe ancient town, as an example. Based on the investigation and study of the settlement characteristics, the strategies of improving traditional features through the development of tourism have been discussed in three aspects: feature cognition, feature construction and feature repair. This paper begins with investigating the architecture, landscape elements and format distribution of the main streets and alleys in the ancient town, and using GIS technology to establish the spatial database of Sanhe ancient town. Taking the advantage of GPS devices which trace tourists visiting path, global trace path has been analyzed in three fields: track lines, track points and kernel density distribution. Meanwhile, slow and fast moving track lines and points have been extracted. Then, characteristic mobility distribution of tourists has been studied, and the correlation between characteristic space and tourist behavior preference is revealed. The paper continues to use the density of street network to extract and calculate the roads in Sanhe ancient town. And the optimization and promotion strategy, which are based on the characteristics of the network and the network permeability, are subsequently proposed. Further, the research clarifies the features of present situation in the ancient town, and analysis tourists recognized style and features of the ancient town from three aspects: layout features, tourists visiting path and network density analysis. It has been studied that the foundation of understanding settlement character is to clearly study its composition elements within the scope. Therefore, establishing an effective and accurate database plays an important role in characteristic settlements development. In terms of style elements, each single unit should seek some changes on the basis of unity. In the aspect of overall layout and development, the attractiveness of the space in scenic areas from east to west and the ability to control stream of people should be strengthened. At the same time, it is necessary to learn the influence of the difference of the streets on the walking speed of the tourists, and reduce tourists walking speed by optimizing the layout of small square, green landscape and characteristic shops. As for the characteristics of street features repair, the network density of the main street in the ancient town has good permeability and high accessibility, but the regional characteristics of style has not been fully reflected where have high permeability. The traffic network connectivity of existing road in the ancient town still needs to be strengthened, which could improve the transportation capacity of the street system. Street landscape design features and guidelines are also need to be improved to guide visitors to expand their tour scope. In sum, the methods of literature analysis, field research, GIS establishing and analysing scene information database, GPS tracking tourists action, street network density quantitative analysis of street morphology are used in this paper. Finally, the inheritance strategies of sustainable development of China's traditional settlements are put forward, and the related suggestions and prospect of future research is proposed. The research extends the new idea of common development between traditional settlements style and characteristic industry. It has certain guiding significance to the renewal, protection and planning of the ancient town, and it also has practical and referential significance to traditional street spacial design and plan.
