Under increasing pressure of farmland protection, rapid urbanization has spurred vast farmland to turn into construction land. Meanwhile, rural residential construction is seizing farmland, severely threatening national food safety and ecological security amid increasingly outstanding contradiction between people and land. Besides, expansion of vacant villages and extensive utilization of rural residential area have contributed to the severity. Therefore, a study on intensive utilization of rural residential land is of great significance on assessing intensive utilization potential of rural habitation, maximizing land resource value and planning regulation on rural settlement.Based on advanced theories and practice of intensive utilization evaluation on rural residential land at home and abroad, along with relevant theories of land planning science and land management science, Rucheng County of Chenzhou City is taken as the research objective for assessing intensive utilization of rural settlement. Main research results are elaborated as follows:(1) Rucheng County has one ultra-large village, Chengguan Town; two medium-size villages, Chengjiao Village and Tuqiao Town; eleven small-size villages, including four with small-medium size, Fucheng Village, Sanxing Town, Jingpo Village, Waisha Village and Yanshou Village; as well as nine ultra-small villages.(2) Farmland in Rucheng County is mainly distributed in Wenming Village, Jingpo Village and Daping Town. Up to 2020, farmland demand will reach 21,518.53 hectare, while farmland supply will stand at 27,380.89 hectare. Basically, Wenming Village, Jingpo Village and Daping Town will be taken as farmland protection area. Meanwhile, six villages need paying attention to farmland conservation in land development, that is, Wenming Village, Daping Town, Nuanshui Town, Maqiao Village, Reshui Town and Tianzhuang Village. Among land development, reclamation, consolidation, etc., land development is considered as the best contributor in farmland replenishment, farmland consolidation as the second best; while rural settlement consolidation replenishes farmland at 39.54 hectare.(3) In the evaluation on intensive utilization of rural residential land in Rucheng County, it is discovered that among its 23 villages and towns, only one is assessed as intensive use, six as moderate use, five as low use and eleven as extensive use. The ultra-large and small-sized villages register relatively high utilization; while small-sized and ultra-small villages hold low utilization. Therefore, it is of practical significance of studying the intensive and economical utilization of rural residential land in Rucheng County.
