Empirical Study On City Scale?Division Of Labor And City Labor Productivity

“2016 China Urban Sustainable development Report" mentioned that there were seven major cities whose per capita GDP are more than 100,000 Yuan,reaching the level of developed countries.We can get that,the greater the scale of the city,the higher the labor productivity of urban.So,whether there is a positive correlation between the two,if there is a positive correlation,how they make it through? So an assumption is made: the larger the size of the city,the greater the space of the division of labor and diversity,through the division of labor and the level of diversity,labor productivity become greater?To analyzes the relationship between urban scale,division of labor and urban labor productivity,this paper first defines the three concepts,analyzes the general situation of urban scale,division of labor level and labor productivity in China.Then sorted out the theory of the interaction between urban scale and labor productivity,combing the mechanism of mutual influence between the three and found that the division of labor is the link between the city scale and the labor productivity,and further summarizes the interaction between the three causal relationships.In order to verify the above assumptions and the theory,this paper studies on286 prefectures in China from 2003 to 2013,and builds simultaneous equation model(SEM),basing on Stata metrological analysis software.The empirical results show that the urban scale and labor productivity influence each other,the city scale expands by 1%,then the labor productivity increases by 0.2%,the labor productivity increases by 1%,the city scale expands by 20.6%,the effect of urbanization on labor productivity has not yet been fully realized,the effect of labor productivity on urbanization is obviously stronger than that of urbanization on economic growth.The expansion of the scale of the city can improve the professional level of the division of labor,the division of labor and professional level can also improve the growth of labor productivity,there is a positive relationship between the three.Among the factors influencing the productivity of labor,the effect of the accumulation of material capital is significant and the productivity of labor is closely related to the development in the last year.And then further compares the differences between large,medium and small-sized cities.The effect of urban scale on labor productivity is not significantly negative,which can be explained by the inverted U-type of the relationship between the city scale and labor productivity,and big cities located in the right of the inverted U-shaped model,they owned a certain size of the city,which resulting in crowded effect,the expansion of urban scale is not conducive to labor productivity.But there is a positive cycle of labor productivity;urban scale and division of labor,especially the division of labor play a big role in the cycle.In small and medium-sized cities,the diversity of labor productivity and urban scale promote each other,the diversity of division of labor also promoted the improvement of productivity,but the level of division of labor decreased with the expansion of city scale,indicating that small and medium-sized cities are inadequate in the inter-industry coordination of transaction costs,industrial cooperation and system security.Just like the conclusion summarized from the whole country,material capital greatly improved the productivity of labor,small cities are greatly dependent on the accumulation of material capital.Political and geographical factors are the obvious role in large cities,the eastern and western geographical location and coastal geographical location show great impact on small cities.At the end of the article,it puts forward the corresponding opinions and suggestions according to the conclusion of the article.Cities with different population size should choose their own way according to their own development characteristics,pay attention to the function of the division of labor to labor productivity.We must strive to improve the conditions of labor mobility,attention to the quality and quantity of economic development and the role of human capital.
