Cotton fabric is particularly favored on account of its distinct characteristics,such as,favorable moisture permeability,wearing comfort and biodegradation,etc.Nevertheless,it tends to breed mold and bacteria,which,consequently,gives rise to the degradation of wearability,exerts negative effect on public environmental sanitation,and even,does harm to human health.Hence,it is of great significance to perform the antibacterial finishing on cotton textile.In this paper,a novel antibacterial finishing agent,polysulfopropylbetaine(PSPB)regarded as the zwitterionic polymer,together with its structure and synthetic routine,was investigated.Specifically speaking,sulfopropylbetaine(SPB),the monomer of PSPB,was prepared by the reaction of N,N-dimethyallylamine(DMAA)and 1,3-Propanesultone(1,3-PS).~1H NMR and FTIR were adopted to characterize the structure of SPB.Based on the single factor analysis method,the synthesis of SPB was the most optimized on conditions that the molar ratio of reagents was 1.0:1.2,the reaction temperature was 60?and the reaction time was 4 h.PSPB was prepared by the polymerization of SPB and maleic anhydirde(MAH)and its molecular structure was characterized by FTIR.Single factor analysis method was used to determine the optimized processing conditions that the concentration of SPB was 9%,the molar ratio was 1.0:1.0,the dosage of initiator was 1.2%,the reaction temperature was 65?and the reaction time was 4 h to prepare PSPB.Broth Dilution Method and Viable Counting Method were employed to evaluate the antibacterial activities of SPB and PSPB,respectively.The result indicated that the minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)of SPB against E.coli and S.aureus,respectively,were 19.2mg/ml and 9.6 mg/mL,while the MIC of PSPB against E.coli and S.aureus,respectively,were2.25 mg/ml and 1.125 mg/m L,which verifies that the antibacterial activity of PSPB is far higher than that of SPB.PSPB,used as antibacterial finishing agent,was grafted onto the surface of cotton fabric by pad-dry-cure technique.In addition,FTIR,XPS and SEM were adopted to characterize and analyze the surface morphology and structure of the antibacterial cotton fabric finished with PSPB.The results showed that-COOH of PSPB was covalently bonded with-OH of cotton fiber,that is,the PSPB anchored onto the surface of cotton fabric via covalent bonds.In terms of the cotton fabric finished with PSPB,the optimum processing conditions that the concentration of PSPB was 54 g/L,the bath ratio was 1:30,the soaking time was 70 min,the baking temperature was 170?and the baking time was 150 s,were determined by single factor analysis method.Flask-shaking Method was adopted to evaluate antibacterial effect and washing durability of the cotton fabric finished with PSPB under the optimized technological conditions.Systematical tests on antibacterial cotton fabric's wearing properties,such as,hydrophilicity,air and moisture permeability,whiteness,mechanical property and thermal property were performed.The result manifested that the cotton fabric finished with PSPB exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against both E.coliand S.aureus,with 99.87%and99.99%respectively in antibacterial rate.What's more,the bacterial reduction rates of the finished cotton fabric,against both bacteria,still exceeded the antibacterial standard of AAA-level antibacterial cotton fabrics even after 50 consecutive laundering cycles.Hydrophilicity of the cotton fabric finished with PSPB was improved greatly with the maximum wicking height increasing from 9.4 cm to 17.9 cm,while air permeability and moisture permeability of the finished cotton fabric were enhanced by 10.49%and 14.88%,respectively.Moreover,breaking strength retention rates of the finished cotton fabric in warp and weft were 88.02%and 86.77%,respectively,while their breaking elongation rates rose by8.84%and 6.63%,respectively.Meanwhile,the retention rate of whiteness was 89.59%and there was little obvious effect on thermal property of the finished cotton fabric.All these properties of the cotton fabric finished with PSPB mentioned above meet the wearability.
