With the development of grinding technology, the structures of abrasive tools are diversified. In order to meet different machining requirements, diamond block grinding tools and groove grinding wheels have been widely applied.Due to the special shape of such abrasive tools, the surface topography measurement methods and feature analysis encounter new challenges. The measurement scheme and surface topography characteristics of electroplated diamond block grinding tool are discussed in this paper. This work is helpful to deepen the understanding of surface morphology of abrasive tools. It can also provide technical support and theoretical basis for improving product surface machining quality and modeling of grinding processes. It is of great significance to further promote the development of ultra-precision grinding technology.A measurement scheme for the surface morphology of diamond block grinding tool is proposed in this paper.Surface morphology of abrasive grains can be modeled by combining the measured data with the morphological features. The lateral topography of the abrasive tool is reconstructed and the parameter characteristics of the surface topography of each section are analyzed. The main research contents of this paper include:(1)The suitable measurement scheme is proposed according to the shape and surface morphology of the diamond block grinding tool.Based on the measurement requirements, the key structural components of the measuring device are discussed and designed.(2)Aiming at the problem of the segmentation of adhesion abrasive grains,a method of segmenting adhesion abrasive grains by combining Otsu and watershed algorithm is proposed.Firstly, the edge of the abrasive particles is extracted by Otsu algorithm. Then, the segmentation of the adhesive grains is completed based on the distance transformation and morphological processing. Finally, the two segmentation algorithms are combined to overcome the ineffectiveness of Otsu algorithm.(3)As the result of statistical analysis shown, the grain size is mainly distributed between 450μm and 550μm with exposed height from 100μm to 250μm.Moreover,the size and exposed height of abrasive grains obey the law of Gaussian distribution.By reconstruction and analysis of the profile of abrasive tool, the morphology of each side of the block is obtained. The experimental results show that the abrasive density on the surface is approximately 203/cm~2.The average size of grains is about 506μm,and the total number of grains is 5574.
