The Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China put forward that the construction of ecological civilization is a millennium plan for the sustainable development of the Chinese nation.We must speed up the reform of the ecological civilization system and build a beautiful China.However,under the background of the rapid increase of urban population,industrialization and urbanization,the problem of urban environmental pollution in China shows an aggravating trend.So,what is the relationship between the size of urban population,urbanization and environmental pollution,what size of urban population,what level of urbanization will aggravate or slow down environmental pollution? Where does the inflection point appear? The relationship between urbanization level and environmental pollution may be affected by the different scale of urban population.These problems need further study and discussion.Under the background of the new urbanization proposed by the Nineteenth National Congress,it can also provide some reference value for the formulation of policies related to urban development and environmental pollution control in China.By constructing the theoretical mechanism of the impact of population size and urbanization level on environmental pollution,using the data of 236 cities above prefecture level in China from 2009 to 2016,this paper takes environmental pollution as the explanatory variable,population size and urbanization level as explanatory variable,and chooses energy utilization efficiency and GDP growth rate,pollution control rate,proportion of secondary production,per capita GDP and total energy consumption as control variables,based on the environmental Kuznets curve and STIRPAT model,a fixed effect model was established to empirically study the relationship between urban population size,urbanization and environmental pollution.The results show that there is a U-shaped relationship between urban population size and environmental pollution from the national urban sample.When the urban population size is less than 1.136 million,the growth of population size will slow down environmental pollution.When the urban population size is larger than 1.136 million,the growth of population size will aggravate environmental pollution.Secondly,there is no obvious relationship between urbanization level and pollution emissions.Relationship.From the urban samples of different levels,the impact of urbanization on environmental pollution will vary with the size of urban population.For small cities,there is a positive correlation between urbanization level and environmental pollution;for medium cities,there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between urbanization level and environmental pollution,with a turning point of 43.7%;for large cities,the level of Urbanization and environmental pollution.There is a significant positive correlation between dyeing and pollution.For super-large and mega-cities,there is a U-shaped relationship between urbanization level and environmental pollution,with a turning point of 72.6%.Finally,on the basis of the research results,this paper puts forward some policy recommendations on urbanization development and ecological environment protection in China.
