The complexity of petrochemical engineering projects includes cross-disciplinary techniques,multiple working groups,and numerous construction unites and their management.Most petrochemical equipment also encompass flammable,explosive,deleterious with high corrosiveness features,which pose much higher requirements to the quality management of petrochemical projects then other general engineering projects.EPC general contract mode can effectively bridge the gaps among engineering,procurement and construction and therefore is being widely adopted for petrochemical engineering projects.However,with the growing number of petrochemical engineering projects in China,the quality management for such projects with the EPC general contract mode now faces new challenges.For example,the overall quality management awareness of the general contractor is lacking;the overall professional background of construction workers is not satisfying;and most importantly,the quality management system needs modifications to better balance the tradeoff between costs and efficiency,.Hence,how to improve the efficiency and level of quality management of petrochemical engineering projects has become a major concern.Lean construction introduces lean mentality into the construction process,which is a sustainable project management mode that can effectively solve the issues such as deadweight losses,delays in construction and low quality control in project management.Therefore,this paper proposes to introduce the lean construction theory into the quality management process of the project under the EPC general contracting mode,aiming to improve the quality management level,and to provide an effective solution to the challenges that quality management under the EPC general contracting mode are now faced with.Firstly,the paper presents an industrial background analysis of the petrochemical engineering projects,which outlines the current challenges that the quality management under the current EPC general contracting mode is faced with.Secondly,it reviews the current EPC project management literature with a focus on the development of EPC mode and its management characteristics.Then it moves forward on to the literature on lean construction theory,including the theory of lean construction,advantages of lean constructing and lean construction assisted technology.Based on the theoretical framework,this paper discusses the feasibility of applying lean construction theory to the quality management of engineering projects under the EPC mode.It presents the concept and connotation of quality management based on lean construction,and provides a roadmap for the implementation of lean management in EPC projects from four aspects: function construction,planning and control system,management requirements and safety precautions.Finally,this paper verifies the effectiveness and viability of the quality management model based on lean construction through a comparative study on two quality management model cases.It further leading to the conclusion that the lean quality management model is not only viable in practice,but also significantly improves the quality control process in petrochemical engineering projects under EPC mode.
