The hemp textiles are well known for its various outstanding properties,such as high hygroscopicity,quick drying,mildew-proof,anti-bacteria,anti-static,radiation-proof,ultraviolet protection etc.,and are considered as “the hidden gold”.In the other hand,they are also known for the poor handfeel,low degree of dyeing,prone to crease and deform,and cause serious pollution in the manufacturing process.Furthermore,the yarn is normally too thick and stiff to be fine knitted or weaved,which lead to very rare high-count hemp textiles found in the market.These problems have jeopardized the promotion and prosperity of this excellent material in the textile industry.Therefore,the development of the hemp fiber and its high-count products is not only in the great need of the current market,but also can be a very challenging topic in the textile industry.The paper started with a historical tracing of the research and development of the hemp fiber at home and abroad,by which presented the strength and weakness of Chinese hemp textile industry in a global background,and revealed the major problems in the process and the final product where we shall improve specifically and imminently.Secondly,the technical innovation conducted in the hemp curing,degumming,yarn spinning,dyeing and finishing process of the hemp products were discussed in details.Being fully-respectful of the character of hemp fibers,the research had addressed considerable technical issues and improved the process systematically to work out the high-count hemp yarn suitable for knitting and weaving.In addition,the moisture absorption and perspiration were also improved in the finishing process.Last but not the least,four kinds of featured samples in 100% hemp yarn were designed based on the above technical improvement.One is woven crepe,while the rest three are knit fabric in interlock,crepe and sandwich construction respectively.After testing and analysis,it shows that the samples' bursting strength,pilling resistence,shrinkage and color fastness has meet or exceed the national standard.What's more,the developed samples performed much better in pilling resistence than the purchased cotton/hemp fabric,which is a bestseller in the market.These testing and evaluation can be used as a solid technical support and reference for the market promotion of hemp textiles in future.Meanwhile,it also demonstrated spinning and knitting possibilities of high-count hemp yarns and relative textiles in bright colors.To summarize,the study had answered a serial of theoretical and technical questions in the spinning and knitting process of high-count hemp yarns and textiles systematically,which would be an advantage for a steady growth of the high-count hemp textile industry.
