The Dong minority has a long history through the time.Due to the preserved diverse village, architecture and traditional culture, the Dong villages in southwest Hunan Province has a high research value. The scope of the investigation was mainly based on Dong villages in Pingtan River,Tongdao County and made field trips through a large number if Dong villages with good integrity and preservation, including Yutou Village,Hengling Village,Pingtan Village,Yanglan Village and Gaobu Village.Among them, the Yutou Village, which was built in Ming dynasty(around 1368-1398)and possessed real well-conserved buildings with national characteristics, such as Village Gate,Drum Tower,Fengyu Bridge and many stilt style residential buildings.Since the clear morphological structure,Yutou Village is the key research village and fully reflects the characteris tics of residential settlement, distribution and village evolution.First of all,the history development, cultural background and social structure of Dong minority in southwest Hunan Province are wildly discussed by literature reviews and field trips to better understand the generation and development of Dong minority village.Secondly, when it comes to the specific analysis of traditional village forms,it is divided into three different level: the relationship between human and nature, the internal social structure of the village and the group relationship of villages with the same geographical environment and cultural background.By the typical Yutou Village, the overall human-nature relationship is analyzed to understand natural environment and the law of evolution in the village development. The characteristics of the site selection, circle distribution and village evolution are discussed to explore the defined Geomantic Concept of Dong minority. Then, the emphasis was transferred to social life space within the village which includes the relationship between the public space and agnation from the perspective of spatial perception factors such as border, node and road,as well as the exploration of the evolution in the indoor space of residential buildings which argues the relationship between family structure and residential architecture.Next, the settlement patterns and reunion diagrams of villages groups are compared under the same geographical environment to investigate the traditional village morphology and its cultural influence factors. Finally, the current situation is evaluated to make principles and potential strategies to help inherit Dong traditional culture in combination with issues of traditional village protection and over-exposure tourism.
