A Comparative Study Of The Residential Buildings Between "North Dong" And "South Dong" In Southwest Hunan

Dong people is mainly located at the border of Hunan,Guizhou and Guangxi provinces,as well as some parts of Hubei Province.The Dong people in Hunan Province mainly lives in the south-western part of Hunan Province and can be divided into "North Dong" and "South Dong" according to the division of dialect area.The South Dong of southwest Hunan is mainly concentrated in Tongdao County and Jingzhou Miao and Dong Autonomous County,the northern Dong is located in Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County,Huitong and Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County.The "North Dong" and "South Dong" have their own characteristics in terms of community composition and single building.Among them,the difference of public buildings is most obvious.The public buildings in the South Dong village mainly contain drum buildings,Fengyuqiao,Zhai Gate,stage and age-old Altar,but there are few public buildings in the North Dong.In addition,the residential buildings in the North and South Dong are also obviously different.The main residence of the South Dong is stilt type,while the north-dong is mainly ground type.The study of public buildings in Dong people has been well studied,while there is only little relatively attention has been paid to residential buildings.But the majority of the villagers’ activities take place in the residential buildings.In order to understand the deep-seated cultural characteristics of Dong people,the residential buildings need to be better and more fully understood.The research studied from macro to micro in this paper.Firstly,it discusses the historical and cultural background of "South Dong" and "the North Dong",including its social organization structure,economic mode of production and national beliefs.Then,it compares the settlements of "South Dong" and "North Dong" in the southwest of Hunan,including settlement location,settlement form,settlement pattern and public space of the village.And then it comes to the main content of the article —— the analysis and comparison of residential buildings in the North Dong and south Dong,including the residential mode,construction technology and construction traditions.Finally,at the end of the article,the author analyzes the reasons for the differences between the residential buildings of "North Dong" and "South Dong" in southwest Hunan,and discusses the cause and effect relationship from the cultural changes,economic development and so on,hoping to provide more information for the further research.
