| China is an ancient country with a civilization of5000years, which also has avast territory and a wealth of resources. Differences are existed in geography andclimate conditions in different regions in China, which also have brought about thedifferences in traditional architecture complex.Located in mountain area in southwest Hunan, affected by geographicalenvironment, climate conditions and traditional customs, The Dong nationalityvillages have formed their unique architecture culture and created splendors and richarchitectural cultural heritage. The Dongs are mainly found in Xinhuang Country,Zhijiang Country, Tongdao Country and Jingzhou Country. Tongdao Country andJingzhou Country situated in the south part are called the South-Dong nationalitywhich are further away from Chinese traditional culture and are less affected by Hanculture. The traditional folkways are more complete maintained in the South-Dongvillages in which there are various styles of traditional architectures. Built accordingto mountain features, most of the South-Dong villages are consist of shelter bridges,village gates, drum-towers, stages, arbors and numerous traditional residences. Andthese entire traditional architecture complexes are relatively well preserved.Taking the South-Dong traditional residence in western Hunan as objects, thefocus of this research is mainly concentrated on the typical features of the spaceconstitution of the South-Dong traditional residence. Firstly it introduces thegeographical environment, climate conditions and traditional customs which havesome influence on the form of traditional residence in the villages. Secondly thisresearch gives an overview of the characteristics of the existent traditional residencein the south-Dong villages, and classifies the form of constitution of research objectsaccording to the practical situation. Furthermore, it analyzes the entrance space, thecombination mode between residence and terrain, horizontal space and vertical spaceinside the single residence, the composition form of each elevations and roofs, andspecially discusses the dynamic space institution of the south-Dong residence with itsnecessary measures in technological means and construction modes. Finally the paperconcludes the construct logic of the south-Dong single residence and thecharacteristics in space constitution based on the analysis in all the chapters before,according to local geographical environment, climate conditions. Then it proposes the direction and application to modern architecture.By means of field research, data induction, survey and drawing and graphicalanalysis, the research classifies and compares the objects in order to theoreticaldirection for the new built residences in the south-Dong villages and to propose someadvice to the design of modern architecture. |
