Owing to the improving life quality,the engine of product innovation has turned from technology to user needs,and product's improved design and development should also be guided by it.Traditional design improvement and development method relies on designers' innovative thinking and accumulated design experience which lack effective systematic theory or scientific design method,leaving new products possess bigger contingency and business risk.Enginery is functions set by user-oriented needs and a comprehensive consideration at both engineering and physical level.If a rigorous design method should start with a precise description of"What to achieve" and end with another precise description of "How to achieve",then"What to achieve" is the user's need to function,whereas "How to achieve" indicates the realization of user's need to function through different product design with engineering and physical consideration.The guiding ideology of this paper is the product design method oriented to user needs.With improved design as its background,this paper proposed a theoretical model and a design method of transforming user needs to design characteristics based on product enginery analysis.By clarifying the relationship of need guiding functions,this paper exports a front-end analysis model and derived a complete analysis model of transforming user needs to design characteristics based on product enginery analysis.Thus backed by this theory,this paper proposed a design method of products improvement.Starting from the product itself,this method obtains the information of the product enginery and sub-enginery through enginery analysis,and converts it into user needs.Then the extracted user needs will be classified by means like questionnaire inquiry,classification of requirement,etc..Different levels of user's needs will be transformed into different hierarchies of design characteristics which will be sorted through weight calculation.Next,product enginery design specifications will be established to assist the following design work according to the practical situation.Eventually,the design case of wireless router will be set as an example for to test this method's effectiveness in the product design process.Method of transforming user needs to design characteristics based on product enginery analysis aims to help designers make the user need data more scientific and analyze different hierarchies of needs more scientifically and visually,thus decide which level's design characteristics to focus.This method can assist designers or developers to determine design objectives,improve user's satisfaction degree to new products and thus to shorten the cycle and optimize the process of improved design and development.
