Research On The Regeneration Of Minor Historic Districts In The Concept Of City Betterment

In the existing protection system of urban historical and cultural heritage in China,the national and provincial historic districts constitute the protection carrier of the district level.Cities have the right to decide whether to set secondary protected objects such as historical neighborhoods.Under the background of large demolition,cities relied on land finance is lack of protection concept and demolished large part of built environment.Historic districts become "isolated island",historical context has been destroyed and can’t contribute to the characteristics any more.It’s going far away from the concept of “City Betterment and Ecological Restoration” Programs as better quality and characteristics.Annual meeting of China’s urban planning(2016)puts forward the concept of nonprotected districts,so the thesis picks up the concept of minor historic district to refer to the historic districts that have not been included in the official list.Using the technique of comparative analysis,spatial syntax and CFD simulation,the author distinguishes its importance in the protection and development of the city.The thesis offers some advices on the revival of the minor historic districts.The thesis has three parts:First,explore the value of minor historic districts,investigate its mechanism of formation and evolution,analysis the characteristics from three dimensions.Though due to the lack of protection,minor historic districts has been declining,the author finds out its intimate neighborhood,traditional street life and self-organizing society are still attractive.Second,as the logical connotation of City Betterment fits the renewal requirements of minor historic districts,some pertinent measures can be helpful.In order to improve the material and social quality by the strategies of space improvement and orderly governance,designers should activate the capital potential of the users,strengthen the connection of history and function of the carriers.Also we need to innovate inner management model.Third,take Dongting District in Wuhan as an empirical case.The author summarizes the shortcomings of the guidance of existing planning on Dongting District,realizes that there’re some problems including low correlation of historical relics,decline of space quality and the lack of public participation.Combining the experience of City Betterment in Wuhan,the thesis complies with the clues of "dismantle-weave-combine-repair" to carry out the repair design.This study deepens the theoretical connotation of City Betterment and clarifies the important value and renewing ideas of minor historic district,which can be used as a reference for the compilation of related planning.
