Shipping is an important transportation and travel way, shipping safety is the most important issue of shipping industry. In recent years, however, shipping accidents happen all too often and shipping safety is worrisome. There are four main factors affecting shipping safety, namely human-machine-environment-management,but human factor affects most seriously.According to authoritative statistics, more than 80% shipping accidents were caused by people. Therefore, the study on crew's physical, mental and working condition is of great significance.Due to the harsh environment, monotonous work, crews are prone to feel burnout.Job burnout is a physical and mental fatigue and exhaustion phenomenon caused by work pressure, which will lead to the deterioration of working conditions of individuals,as well as personal and organizational safety performance reduction, security risks increase, and may even lead to shipping accidents.Based on the above understanding and summarizing existing research results at home and abroad, this paper defined crew's job burnout, safety performance, investigated their burnout situation, researched the relationship between job burnout and safety performance, and selected coping style as the intermediary variable. With reference to job burnout, coping style and safety performance maturity scale, necessary adjustments and adaptations were made in this paper.According to the test, the reliability and validity were both good.In this study, paper and electronic questionnaires were sent to crews in several large shipping companies, shipping graduates of a university, and crews on shipping forum, and SPSS19.0 was used to analyze the recovery data. This paper drew the following conclusions:The overall level of crew's job burnout is a little high. There was a significantly negative correlation between crew job burnout and positive coping, but a significantly positive correlation with passive coping.Positive coping was positively related to safety performance, yet passive coping was significantly negatively correlated with it.Crew job burnout and safety performance was significantly negatively correlated.Coping styles played an intermediary role in some dimensions of crew's burnout and safety performance.Demographic variables have an impact on job burnout, coping style and safety performance.According to the conclusions, hypothesis testing and model updating were made.Aiming at the conclusion of the study, this paper proposed crew burnout mitigation measures, and meanwhile guided crew to take positive coping methods to improve their safety performance and shipping safety. Finally, the innovation points and deficiencies of this research were summarized, and the prospects for future research were put forward.
