Although the Chinese government has been facilitating the social reform of the industry and service for the aged from 2011,the “9073” and “9064” retirement patterns that have been formed during such years still have many difficulties in catering to the old people's needs on aging in place.Under such circumstances,the Embedded Retirement Pattern(ERP)emerges gradually.As a practical form of the ERP in the architectural field,the Embedded Retirement Facility(ERF)not only has its appealing creativity,but also manifests problems such as weak effects in scale and difficult in balancing payments.Therefore,the reasonable investigation and cognition of the designing conditions and design plan descriptions have become the prerequisites for the launch of the ERF project,on the basis of which,the research of architectural programming of ERF starts.The process of architectural programming towards ERF is integrative,the targets of which are clarifying the size of ERF and defining which services that will be offered to the aged after the construction stage.In order to make sure that the ERF will meet principles of small scale,integration of diversify resources,and adaption to the surroundings,problems form knowledge,decision-making and operation aspects should be solved.This paper presents the definition of ERF,preliminarily develops the theoretical system of architectural programming towards ERF,classifies ERF considering different standards,and discusses ways elderly care facilities can be embedded into communities.The architectural programming process towards ERF contains two main stages: information seeking,together with analyzing and decision-making.During the information seeking stage,people's needs of ERFs should be transformed into architectural languages.By referring to constructing,operating and managing experiences from similar facilities home and abroad,risks and problems that the ERF will face after being built can be resonablely avoided.In addition,the type of ERF should be clarified,the scale of ERF should be estimated,and occupation patterns should be surveyed in order to know conditions of the community,features of targeted people and functional needs of spaces.The analyzing and decision-making stage is closely related to the quality of architectural programming results.Analytical methods in social and psychological fields,as well as other fields,could all be applied during this stage.Based on information seeking results,this stage will focus on spatial imaginations of ERF,predicating and evaluating imaginations,as well as the following materialization and technicalization them.After all the work that mentioned above is accomplished,the related results will be illustrated through the combination of diagrams,tables and texts.Guided by architectural programming theory and adopting literature review,interdisciplinary research,system analysis and case study methods,this paper discusses the methods of completing the stages of architectural programming process towards ERF,elaborates the specific requirements of the programming results,in order to provide theoretical instructions for the design of ERF.
