Since 1930's,the international community has paid more and more attention to the research and protection of traditional villages, town local buildings. It was put forward in the 1933 Athens Charter that places of interest and historical buildings should be retained in the process of urban development. The study on the protection of historical villages and towns in China began in the 1980s.The investigation and development as well as projection planning of the ancient village of water town in southern Yangtze River were carried out under the lead of Professor Ruan Yisan of Tongji University.Since then, many scholars and related people have carried out a lot of research and practice on the present situation, value and protection and utilization countermeasures, policies and sources of funds of historical villages and towns, neighborhoods and so on,and obtained abundant research results.Xu Wan,on the Yeshan Island in Taihu Lake,is an island surrounded by water.Xu Wan village is surrounded by hills on three sides and faces Taihu Lake in the south.Xu Wan is a treasured land by water and is backed by hills. As Suzhou's first batch of control to protect ancient villages,Xu Wan has not been effectively protected so far. This paper selects Xu Wan as the research subject to explore the appropriate regional upgrade strategy, which is representative to some extent. This study treats the protection and planning of ancient villages with the correct historical attitude. On the basis of ensuring the unity of the overall style of ancient villages, the new buildings echo the old buildings in terms of volume, space, materials and color etc.to present their own times and characteristics. It provides guidance and basis for future protection and upgrade, and also a reference for the future development of regional ancient villages.
