The times characteristics of architecture are the concepts which illustrate the relationship between architecture and human’s constantly-evolving living styles,not just a concept of time axis instead.And this process requires the architecture cannot be existed all alone without any human activities.Although the vernacular architecture is subordinate to the architecture,most vernacular architects are excluded from orthodox architecture.When it comes to the vernacular architecture,majority of modern architectural designers,more or less,express their indifferent attitude,due to the lack of aesthetics,design or technical craft in vernacular architecture field.Such kinds of phenomena are the result of the deficiency of the social structure of rural areas and social activities.Nearly 1 billion abodes all around the world are built by dwellers themselves.This phenomenon illustrates the concept of “the aim to build the abodes is to seek shelter from wind and rain”,and “homes for all” means that the interaction between human and architecture lies in the times.While,on one side,the characteristics of architectural ages embody in its rich and long history;on the other side,the close connections among vernacular architecture,society,economy and culture are also included.Except for the prejudice to the vernacular architecture,from the epochal view of “construction”,it is our new option to do the research on the building process of vernacular architecture,not just on the consequence of it.The urban-rural relationship turns complex and disorder and it is the same to the vernacular architecture.It is worth thinking deeply that whether the differences between urban and country cause the vernacular architecture differences in space,because the existing vernacular architecture researches are insufficient.From the view of construction,this thesis focuses on the times characteristics of vernacular architectures of Tian Xing Islet in 70 s.The concept of construction is neither criticism nor development,instead,it emphasizes on restoring the historical period or explaining the relationship between the daily life in countryside and architectural space.The thesis is based on the field research on vernacular architectures of Tian Xing Islet in 70 s.Seeing from those prototypes,the author combines the history of vernacular architecture both in China and abroad to present the view about the times characteristics of vernacular architectures.By a meticulous perspective,the author compares the different functions of central room,kitchen,and bedroom between vernacular architectures and modern urban family space,which can provoke the reflection about the times influence on vernacular architecture.Through analyzing the social activities,development of society,and psychological consciousness of human,the author explores the “historical authenticity” and “form typicality” of vernacular architecture.
