Famous historical and cultural cities are an important part of China's urban system and historical and cultural heritage protection.Their rich historical resources and strong cultural atmosphere are important windows for inheriting local culture and highlighting regional characteristics.As China's economy has entered the "new normal" and cities are seeking industrial transformation,famous historical and cultural cities have been widely favored for their great cultural value and tourism development potential.However,in the process of the development of famous historical and cultural cities,constructive destruction,urban functional disorder,the convergence of landscape features,the loss of urban characteristics and other issues emerge in an endless stream,shows urban renewal and development lack of scientific theoretical guidance.How to effectively protect the historical and cultural city as a special resource,reasonable renewal and transformation,so that it can adapt to the development of modern society,help urban economic transformation,has become an important issue to be solved,and the "City Betterment" concept for the reconstruction of historical and cultural city design provides a new idea.Taking the concept of "City Betterment" as the core,this paper evaluates and sorts out the material space environment of the old town of Pingwu county,one of the famous historical and cultural cities in Sichuan province,uses urban design techniques to improve urban problems,and explores new methods for the reconstruction design of Pingwu old town under the concept of urban repair.The main content of this paper mainly includes five parts: background research,basic research,current situation evaluation,design demonstrates and conclusion.The first part is background research,which introduces the research background of this paper,expounds the practical significance and main purpose of this research,explains the research methods and objects,and puts forward the thinking framework and innovation of the research topic.In the second part,the background research defines the relevant concepts of this paper,summarizes the development process of historical heritage protection at home and abroad and the research trend of city betterment concept,and expounds and summarizes relevant theories and practical cases at home and abroad.The third part is the status quo evaluation.Firstly,it introduces the historical evolution,cultural relics,ecological environment and other contents of Pingwu old city.Combining with field investigation and questionnaire survey,it uses the analytic hierarchy process to construct the status quo evaluation system of Pingwu old city,and analyzes and summarizes the existing problems in the status quo.In the fourth part,based on the status quo problems analyzed above,the urban landscape,road traffic,public space and green space system of Pingwu old city are repaired and designed,and then the urban patching design is deepened by transforming characteristic area,landscape interface,night light,dynamic place and other contents.The fifth part summarizes the conclusions and points out the shortcomings of this paper.This paper is a new attempt to promote the protection and renewal of China's famous historical and cultural cities with the idea of urban repair.Through the construction of evaluation system and practical demonstration,the paper explores the new model of the reconstruction and renewal of famous historical and cultural cities,enriches the theoretical connotation of "City Betterment",expands the practical scope of "City Betterment",and makes Suggestions for the development of Pingwu old town,and also provides reference for the reconstruction and renewal of other historical towns in the future.
