Since the reform and opening up,urbanization has played an important role in the process of social and economic development. In the process of rapid urbanization, the development of highway transportation has greatly shortened the geographical distance between cities and towns, and accelerated the process of transferring rural surplus labor to cities.Based on the theory of push-pull theory, location theory, growth pole theory,point-axis development theory and transportation economic belt theory, this paper first constructs a theoretical model to derive the impact of highway construction on urbanization, and takes Gansu Province as an example, from economic growth, the industrial structure upgrade and the spatial spillover effect of the road network deeply analyze the mechanism of the impact of highway construction on urbanization. Then the empirical analysis of the impact of highway construction on urbanization in Gansu Province is made. The entropy weight TOPSIS method is used to calculate Gansu Province.Based on the panel data regression, the paper analyzes the impact of ordinary highways and highways on urbanization, and introduces a spatial weight matrix to explore the spatial spillover effect of highway construction on urbanization, and finally explored the elastic relationship between road construction and urbanization. The empirical results show that:(1)the urbanization level of theHexi Corridor is higher in the urbanization level;(2)the horizontal spatial agglomeration of urbanization in various cities of Gansu Province increases, showing a significant low-low(LL)agglomeration phenomenon, and Significant high-high(HH)and low-low(LL)agglomeration occurred in highway construction, and this spatial agglomeration did not develop towards the “growth pole” model;(3)after considering the spatial factors,it was found that Highway construction has no obvious impact on the level of local urbanization, but the construction of expressways has a significant role in promoting the level of urbanization in the local area, while the construction of ordinary roads and the construction of expressways in nearby areas have resulted in the negative spatial spillover effects in local urbanization.;(4)the impact of different grades of highways on urbanization in Gansu Province is also different,if the spatial effects are not considered, the impact of highway construction on urbanization in Gansu Province is overestimated, the impact of the change is negative, the highway is overestimated by 0.9534 units, and the impact of highways on urbanization is much greater than that of ordinary roads.(5)on the basis of the elastic analysis,it is found that the development level of ordinary highways in most of the cities and counties of Gansu Province lags behind the development level of urbanization, and highway construction shows more sensitive on the various cities and towns in the process of urbanization.Based on the results of empirical analysis, this paper proposes countermeasures and suggestions from the aspects of increasing government input, focusing on ordinary highway construction, accelerating the construction of expressway network, and narrowing regional differences. It is hoped that the level of urbanization in Gansu Province can be effectively improved.
