The development of regional economy cannot be separated from the support and guarantee of transportation infrastructure. As the most basic and extensive transportation infrastructure, highway is the main support for connecting various transportation modes and giving full play to the overall efficiency of the comprehensive transportation network, and occupies an irreplaceable position in the transportation system.Vigorously developing road construction can promote the flow of production factors between different regions, but excessive development and construction may lead to low efficiency of road infrastructure, unreasonable competition, waste and other phenomena. On the other hand,it will lead to the flow of production factors to relatively developed regions, resulting in negative spillover effect on economic growth. Therefore, under the strategic background of building a powerful transportation country and realizing regional economic integration,it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study the efficiency of highway transportation and its influence on economic growth in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. This paper firstly defines the concepts related to highway transportation efficiency, explains the classical economic growth theory and the new economic geography theory, and then describes the theoretical basis of the spatial spillover effect of highway transportation infrastructure. In the empirical research section, there are three parts, including using the super efficiency DEA window-Malmquist index method to estimate the input-output efficiency of highway transport in the provinces of the Yangtze River Economic Belt during 2014-2020 from static and dynamic perspectives and using cluster analysis to dig out the deep-rooted reasons for the differences in transport efficiency;constructing and verifying the spatial auto correlation of economic growth of Geographical adjacency matrix, inverse distance matrix, economic geography complex matrix;analyzing the space for economic growth of highway development Spillover effect. The results are as follows:(1)Overall,the highway transport efficiency is at a relatively high level, and there are obvious differences between the upper, middle and lower provinces.(2)The results of dynamic analysis show that the highway transport efficiency on the whole presents a downward trend, and the deterioration of technological progress index is the main reason for the decline of highway transport efficiency. However, the operation and management level and scale of highway transport enterprises in the Yangtze River Economic Belt region as a whole have been significantly improved.(3)At the regional level, the changes of highway transport efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt can be divided into three types: technological progress driven, technological efficiency driven and low-growth.(4)There is a significant positive spatial auto correlation of economic growth under the three spatial weight matrices. In terms of spatial distribution patterns,Zhejiang,Jiangsu and Shanghai present a high-high agglomeration distribution, while Sichuan,Chongqing,Guizhou,Yunnan,Hubei and Hunan present a low-low agglomeration distribution.(5)Highway infrastructure can not only promote regional economic development, but also have significant spatial spillover effect. The analysis of the spatial effect shows that the indirect effect is more obvious than the direct effect, that is,the main way to promote the regional economic development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt is through the spatial spillover effect.
