Western Scholars' Research On Chinese Gardens

From the 16th century to the present,many Western scholars have carried out in-depth research on Chinese gardens,providing new perspectives,contents and viewpoints for the understanding of Chinese garden art and concept,as well as the enrichment and innovation of the existing theoretical framework.Investigating the study of Chinese gardens by Western scholars can provide us with a more comprehensive,impartial and objective understanding of Chinese gardens.This thesis aims to understand the process,content and theories of Western scholars' research on Chinese gardens by reviewing the historical changes of attitudes,the art of gardening and the characteristics of gardening thoughts.The paper is divided into five chapters.First of all,the purpose and significance of this research are put forward at the beginning.Then,according to the western scholars' history process,substances and theoretical results of Chinese garden research,the academic attitudes,research ideas and methods behind these contents are explored.Finally,the last chapter carries out a summary of these findings.This study identifies that Western scholars' research on Chinese gardens has a certain degree of commonality due largely to their political and economic positions,cultural backgrounds,thinking conventions,and methodologies.At the same time,because of these commonalities,they also have different attitudes,perspectives,achievements and a number of defects from their Chinese counterparts.
