A Report On The Translation Of Sustainable Construction:Green Building Design And Delivery

Following the principle of sustainability,the technical innovation of green building created by the construction industry in the world has become mature in the Western world.China recently commencedto promote the technology in the middle and western regions via the cooperation with the Western countries.On this occasion,the translation of the English material on the technology into Chinese becomes one of crucial paths to strengthen the sustainability of Chinese construction industry.The selected book for the translation practice is a textbook on green building from the University of Florida,US,published in 2016.The book not only introduces comprehensive background knowledge of the technology,but also offers its latest practical cases all over the world.From this point of view,besides providing fundamental knowledge and professional information of green building to its readers,the English text encouragesthem to put the technology into practice as well.Meanwhile these functions of the text are reflected by its stylistic features.The professional and precise words in the text are used to organize the essential concepts andfundamentals.The nominalization and the passive-voice clauses in the text present the conciseness and objectivity of scientific and technologicaltexts.Furthermore,the organization of the text is characterized by several rhetorical strategies applied which assist the translator to grasp the information efficiently.In addition,through reviewing the previous literature on translation practices about English texts for Science and Technology(EST),there is a scarcity of a comprehensive perspectivefor the EST translation practice of green building.Most of the traditionaltranslation theories applied either focus on internal linguistic structures or external elements.However,Adaptation Theory(AT)proposed by Jef Verschueren(2000)illuminating pragmatics with a comprehensive view,sheds light on both the translation studies and practices with a holistic theoretical basis.Therefore the translation practice of green building attempts to probe into the guidance of AT on solving the problems encountered in the process of the translation of the EST text.In translating,the translator of the EST translation practice is guided by thecontext,structure and dynamics aspects in the theory of ATthrough achieving adaptation at the lexical,syntactical and textual levels in the translation with adapted methods.The discussion of the examples from the translation practice evidences that the EST translation practice can complete an adapted translated version with the comprehensive perspective and unified approach of AT.The practice provides future translators with a first-hand experience on similar translation as well as a useful reference work for them.In addition,the availability of the Chinese translation would better serve the target students‘ and common readers‘ needs with the fundamental knowledge and the latest information of green building from the Western countries.Meanwhile it is hoped to promote the readers‘environmental awareness as well.
