Ro-Ro passenger ship is a kind of high value-added transport ship with no transverse bulkheads in its cargo cabins as usual, and designers seldom set longitudinal bulkheads and pillars for the convenience of moving cargos. As a result,Ro-Ro ship is generally weak in resistance to sinking and structural strength.Damage and flooding of ships lead to danger even capsizing so the problem of ship safety research is of vital importance.Ship may reach a more dangerous situation during flooding progress than that when the flooding progress is finished. In this paper,a 1600 RoRo ship was checked by the latest probability damage stability criterion. Then STAR-CCM+ was applied as a research tool to discuss the relevant parameters for capturing the free-surface which is important in flooding process, and to achieve the time-domain simulation of the triansient asymmetry flooding progress of a RoRo ship.Targeting at free-floating damaged RoRo ship,we used VOF method to simulate the water-air free surface, and firstly used the Overset Grid dynamic mesh method with DFBI(Dynamic Fluid Body Interaction)six degree of freedom solver to deal with the ship motion represented by heaving and rolling in ship damage and flooing problem. In the simulation result,we can get the the liquid level in compartment and ship floating conditions over time, and observe transient phenomenons like jet flow and splashing. The final floating condition result agreed well with the traditional quasi-static method result.
