Research On The Relation Between Urban Development Of Wuhan And The Construction Of Running Water System During The 1930s

The running water system of Wuhan City originated in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,which was an important symbol of urban modernization.Based on the distribution of running water system in Wuhan during the 1930 s,the research is aimed to discuss about the relation between the urban development of Modern Wuhan and the construction of running water system.The research covers the period of the 1930 s.It was both the end of the "Golden Decade" of the Republic of China and the eve of the Sino-Japanese War.On the one hand,it made great progress in the urban construction of Wuhan City during this period.On the other hand,the water supply situation of Wuhan City during this period was recorded authentically in detail in the 1936 Edition of "Military Geography Files of Yangtze River Basin between Hukow and Yichang",which is the research basis of this paper.It is provided with an important scientific research value.The research is aimed to restore the urban water supply situation of the 1930 s by marking the statistical data of the book on the historical map and combining the relevant historical data and pictures.It is found by reviewing the running water production process that the establishment of the running water system is in line with the original urban spatial pattern,and plays a certain role in the subsequent urban development.By sorting out the relevant documents and materials,the research focus on the relation between urban development and the construction of running water system through 3 aspects: urban space construction,municipal construction and building construction.Firstly,the relation between the urban space construction of Wuhan City and the running water system is studied by comparing the historical maps of different periods and combining the relevant historical data,including the expansion of urban built-up areas,the change of urban water intake and use function space,the construction and transformationof the road system,and the construction on water activities projects and water scenery in urban parks.Secondly,the relation between the municipal construction of Wuhan City and the running water system is studied on the basis of local chronicles and archives,including the popularization of water supply facilities,the construction and transformation of the drainage system,the improvement on the urban health environment,the upgrading of the urban fire protection system,and the establishment and adjustment of relevant laws and regulations.Finally,the relation between the building construction of Wuhan City and the water system is studied through on-the-spot investigation and combination with relevant laws and regulations,including civil buildings,industrial buildings,architectural forms,architectural structures and the relationship of the drainage system of buildings with architectural forms and architectural structures.In the research,the running water system is taken as a starting point to study urban construction.Not only does it supplement the running water research system and provide a new idea for the research on the urban history of Modern Wuhan,but it also provides a theoretical basis for the research of Wuhan City nowadays.
